On
the Road
Cotswold August 17th
Whilst
Ben Ainsley was doing his bit for history ten sailors from far and wide gathered
for Cotswold Model Yacht Club’s Footy open meeting.
After
the drifting match at Aylesbury it was great to get some decent wind and Trevor
Thomas made the most of it from the off. Starting 1,1,2,1 he left the rest of
the fleet standing and it was only John Birnie that provided any viable
opposition. Gary and Christine Sanderson made the long journey up from
Lawrence
Hartley suffered the trauma of seeing his boat sink after the aerial plug came
loose and it took the skills of the rescue boat skipper and Gary Sanderson to
recover the boat from seven foot of water; an operation that was not
aided by the “helpful” suggestions from the shore.
With
rain clouds banking up to windward and some very long homeward journeys
beckoning a halt was called after thirteen races.
David
Wilkinson and the race team did a superb job and kept
things moving along nicely and the competitors were unanimous in their
desire to return to the club again.

Hot day at Hove
The Hove Corporation Cup 29th June
A stiff breeze and warm sunshine greeted the seven Footies that arrived at Hove Lagoon for one of the oldest trophies in Model Yachting.
Roger Stollery (Guildford) had a tremendous day, not only winning by a country mile, but also as a designer, with three of his designs in the top four.
A great day and a solid learning experience
Despite the plethora of other classes, the
Footies more than held their own with five visitors joining Bill Green at
Bournville for a day of informal racing and boat development.
Bill spent the morning giving
Trevor Thomas lessons on sailmaking, Andy Trewin experimented with his
“square” rig on his new V12, and Mark Collyer tried unsuccessfully to get to
grips with the sloop rig on his Kittywake; meanwhile Charles Smith and John
Birine ( Bug and Micron, respectively) looked on and enjoyed the cabaret. When
the racing started it was Trevor’s Mistallette and Bill’s Micron that set
the pace for the afternoon with honours coming out even. John showed well in
third and the others improved as the day went on.
In terms of numbers the Footies
showed well and although the Micro Magics had greater numbers they were boosted
by the MYA/RYA fleet with Mike
Weston doing an admirable job loaning them to anyone who happened to put their
own boats down for a second.
All in all a very successful day and all credit is due to the club and the MYA
for this.
